My Teacher Story

Tales of Frogs and Cupcakes is hosting a linky party of how you came to be in the classroom!  So I thought it would be neat to share my own story.

I have always loved everything associated with teaching!  In elementary school I would get unwanted materials from my teachers and use them to play school at home.  I had a grade book and everything!  And if you were mean to me during the school day, your grades that evening would surely reflect it.

But somewhere during my high school years, I decided that I wanted a more "prestigious" job that would pay me more money.  I was very unsure of what exactly I wanted to do after graduation so I attended a business school and studied accounting.  Looking back, I know that I could have done something much greater, but I honestly don't think I'd change my decision because of what I learned from those years.  After a year at the business school I graduated and got a job as an Administrative Assistant at a mutual fund company.  It wasn't long before I moved up and became a Pricing Analyst.  I worked for that company for around 3 years.  I made good money and LOVED my job!  I had opportunities and experiences there that I would never have had otherwise and I am very grateful for that.

However, I began feeling like that chapter of my life was over and the desire to become a teacher was growing.  I finally walked into my bosses office and told him that I would be leaving at the beginning of the following year.  It was a hard decision (and very scary!) but I was trusting that God would provide for me.  I signed up for classes at the local community college and got a job waiting tables.  Quite the turnaround.  I had several other part time jobs in the years that I attended college.  I transferred to a nearby university and was lucky enough to have several girls from my area that were also in the educator program.  We carpooled and attended classes together and it was great to have their support.

After graduation I was hired by the district that I currently work for and I could not be happier!  I am SO glad that I took that leap of faith all those years ago!

Quick Trip to Target

I'm not a huge fan of Target (gasp!).  I'm not sure what it is, but for some reason I just don't feel great joy when I walk in there.  Anywho, today I needed to go and get a baby shower gift so I ran through the Dollar Spot to check out the goods.

I saw the ever-popular pocket charts (have a million that I never use), stickers, pencils, baskets, etc. but I felt no urge to buy any of that stuff.  I have a bazillion baskets that I only use about half of, and I'm so over stickers and such.  I'm desperately trying to declutter and downsize the amount of JUNK I have in my room.
So I only bought a couple of things and I'm proud that I spent $17.32 and I know I will use what I bought!

The first thing I found were these chapter books for $1 each.  Seriously...brand new books for a dollar?!?  There is absolutely NO WAY I was passing those up!  I love that they are classic chapter books.  The themes and morals in these books are wonderful to use for comprehension lessons.

Next up were these ADORABLE little buckets with chalkboard labels for $1.  I'll admit I'm not 100% sure what I will do with these, but one idea is to use them for my red / blue pens for editing / revising during Writer's Workshop.  Once I can get back into my room and start putting it together I know I'll find the perfect spot for them.

Once I get paid on Friday, I'll be making the trip to Walmart to check prices on all the extra supplies I'll need.  That trip will definitely be more than $17.32!

New Look

I'm hoping my new blog design will encourage me to post on a regular basis! I absolutely love it!

I chose to use a premade template and found Honey Bunch Blog Design through Teaching Blog Addict. Misty and Erika were absolutely wonderful and I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone!  I could not believe how quickly things went and by the end of the evening I had my new blog design and I couldn't be happier!

Well I really sucked it up big time as a classroom blogger this past year!  BUT I am hoping that this year will be different.  I am moving up to teaching 3rd grade ELA/SS and I could not be more excited!  I will also have a student teacher this year so it will be a learning experience for both of us LOL!

I will be posting classroom decor and organization things as the summer progresses.  We don't get back into our building until August so I'm trying to get as much done at home as I can.  And of course, I'm spending plenty of time on Pinterest :)

Stay tuned!
